This study examines how women in Algiers represent the risk of victimization and how these representations reshape their relationship to urban space. We adopted a qualitative approach, conducting semi-structured individual and focus-group interviews with students at the University of Algiers 2. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s framework (2006), complemented by quantitative content analysis with MAXQDA software. The findings point to two interwoven dimensions of risk perception: a collective–cognitive register nourished by circulating images and narratives, and a personal–affective register triggered by immediate spatial cues and lived experience. Perceived insecurity is amplified by visible disorder and neglect, and mitigated by active human presence and informal social control. Social heterogeneity and unfamiliarity heighten fear, whereas local embeddedness and place familiarity foster a sense of safety. In response, participants adopt everyday precautionary strategies that retime and reroute their use of the city—avoiding specific times and routes, limiting exposure, and re-planning mobility. A partial normalization of certain hazards also emerges, reflecting the operation of symbolic violence in producing self-imposed constraints on women’s movement and some spatial uses.
