Political discourse is an effective tool that has a significant impact on influencing political decision making and shaping public perception. Politicians often resort to the use of metaphors in their political speeches. This study aims at exploring the cognitive effects of metaphorical language on public perception in political communication. Four American presidential political speeches were analysed through a qualitative content analysis. The results revealed that metaphors affect public opinion by facilitating the comprehension of complex political concepts, evoking citizens’ emotional responses, and making politicians more persuasive in their communications. The current research contributes to the fields of cognitive linguistics and critical discourse analysis by providing comprehensive, qualitative evidence of the strategic use of metaphors in contemporary political discourse to influence public opinion and cognitive models, thereby demonstrating the methodological synergy between critical and linguistic approaches to discourse analysis.
