Abstract The issue of women is considered one of the most prominent topics that has occupied contemporary Arab thought, where cultural, religious, social, and political dimensions intersect. This thought has witnessed profound transformations in its view of women’s status and role, especially with the beginnings of the Arab renaissance and reform movements in the nineteenth century. Reformist thinkers such as Qasim Amin called for women’s education and empowerment, considering them essential conditions for societal progress. Likewise, modernist thinkers such as Muhammad Abduh offered new interpretations of religious texts that affirmed women’s dignity and rights. At the same time, traditional discourse remained present, preserving inherited conceptions that confined women’s roles within narrow frameworks. With the development of Arab feminist movements, the debate expanded to include issues of equality, justice, and political representation. However, the gap between theoretical discourse and practical implementation still persists in many Arab societies. While constitutions and laws affirm women’s rights, reality presents social and cultural challenges that hinder the realization of those rights. Here emerges the tension between what is proclaimed in intellectual and media discourse and what is actually practiced in everyday life. Thus, studying women in contemporary Arab thought—between discourse and practice—reveals the trajectory of change, its limitations, and the prospects for its further development.
