Abstract: This article analyzes the topic of the influence of philosophy on cinema through the allegory of the cave by the Greek philosopher Plato (428/427-347-348 BC), as Plato transforms the allegory of cave into a timeless cinematic image. By doing so, he gave cinema an intellectual existence before its actual existence and an essential status in philosophy, as cinema is considered" the difference between them lies in the method of composing images. While Plato composes mental images to construct the allegory oh the cave in terms of place, time, shadows, light, characters, etc… he thus opened up an unlimited space for the filmmaker who benefits from this method and transforms Plato's mental images into concrete cinematic images that differ from the former in terms of composition, language, and objectives, etc…, but ultimately correspond to the former in that they are composed mental images dominated by the symbolic character and the features of imitating reality in all its forms, or the imitation. Plato did not create the concepts of the cave, light, shadows, and fire, etc…, out of nothing, but rather abstracted them from lived reality and transformed them into artistic images with meaning and purpose. This is exactly what philosophy did after him. For example, we find jean-Paul Sartre in his book the theory of emotions-he speaks about traits, rituals, picking sour grapes, etc…, and facts present in the philosopher's life. On this basis, philosophy and cinema become a tool for expressing reality as it is and composing it in different ways. However, Plato ultimately rejects the imitation of imitation, which makes the place of cinema in Plato's philosophy subject to analysis and interpretation. This is what we will address in this research paper.
