We seek, in this study, to trace the echoes of the December 1960 demonstrations in Algeria against the policy of De Gaulle in selected international newspapers and to highlight the most significant aspects of their coverage of these events. We examine the historical context of the demonstrations and present examples from Arab and Islamic newspapers, such as the Egyptian al-Burhān, the Iraqi al-Taqaddum, the Tunisian al-Ṣabāḥ and the Turkish al-Umma, as well as from several European newspapers, including the British Daily Express, the Swiss Jura, the French Le Figaro and the Spanish Pueblo. The study employs a historical method and qualitative content analysis to identify points of convergence and divergence among these newspapers. The findings indicate that the Arab and Islamic press foregrounded the abuses and repression of the French police against the demonstrators and regarded the demonstrations as a means of exerting pressure to bring the Algerian question before the United Nations. In contrast, some Western newspapers depicted events as purely French internal matters. By comparing these different orientations, the study demonstrates how international press coverage reflected broader diplomatic and ideological positions on the Algerian issue, thereby contributing to the historiography of the Algerian revolution and to media studies on decolonization.
