Carbon Monoxide Measurement In Exhaled Air Among Gas Station Workers In Tlemcen, Algeria

Abstract

Fuel combustion is one of the main sources of carbon monoxide (CO). Chronic occupational exposure to this toxic gas has a harmful effect on physical capacity, particularly among gas station employees. The objective of this cross-sectional study carried out from January to September 2024 was to determine carbon monoxide concentration in exhaled air (COE) and carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) among gas station workers in Tlemcen, Algeria. Materials: the Smokerlyser®, was used to measure COE and COHb, data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS 26. Results: The 49 subjects included had a mean age of 43.02 ± 9.14 years, they were all male with approximately 57% smokers and 42.90% non-smokers. The mean COE was 10.20 ± 8.276 ppm and COHb 2.26 ± 1.32%. These levels were significantly higher in smokers (COE = 16.04 ± 6.25 ppm, COHb = 3.19 ± 1.00%) compared to non-smokers (COE = 2.43 ± 0.598 ppm and COHb = 1.01 ± 0.095%) (p<0.0001). Fatigue and headache were reported by 83.7% and 67.3% of workers respectively. These symptoms were 0.05 times more common among people who had worked for more than or equal to 20 years, according to logistic regression analysis (OR = 0.05, CI 95% = 0.003-0.719, p = 0.028). Conclusion: Chronic exposure of gas station employees to combustible chemicals increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Regular biomonitoring and the implementation of adequate protective measures are necessary.
