Abstract The revitalization of small and medium-sized entreprise sector represents, for public authorities in Algeria, one of the major-if not priority- axes for strenghening and densifiying the economic fabric, with a view to ensuring gradual and sustainable development. The latter would only be effective through a reduction in the mortality rate of small and medium-sized entreprises in order to ensure sustainability little compromised within ahighly competieive business climate governed by a generally unstable market. For this reason, the pupose of this study is to attempt to identify the main causes of the phenomenon of SME mortality and, by extention, to demonstrade whether the disappearrance of these economic entities is matter of inevitability or the consequence of a governace deficit. The study will subsequently concluded with a recommendations intended to mitigate the negative effects of this phenomenon. Key words: SME’s, mortality, economic fabric, sustainable development, inevitability and governance.
