Introduction Burns are a common and potentially serious condition. Their vital prognosis depends on several factors. Mortality remains high, particularly in severe forms. The aim of our study was to describe severity factors and the mortality observed among burn patients hospitalized in our department. Materials and methods This was a prospective descriptive and analytical study conducted in the Burn Unit of Batna University Hospital in 2023, including patients hospitalized for burns according to specific criteria of extent and location. The variables studied included demographic characteristics, the causal agent, burn severity, and outcomes (infection and mortality). Assessment was based on standardized tools (Wallace Rule of Nines, Lund-Browder chart, Baux and UBS scores). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (χ² test, p ≤ 0.05), in accordance with ethical standards, particularly informed consent and patient confidentiality. Results A total of 233 patients were included. Children aged 1–5 years were the most represented group. Several severity factors were identified, notably a burned body surface area (TBSA) greater than 30%, burn depth, extreme age (over 65 years). The overall mortality rate was 15.9%, with a rate of 83.3% in flame burns and 64.5% for burns involving more than 50% of the body surface. Mortality was also higher in patients with deep burns and reached 83.3% for a BAUX score greater than 100, as well as for a UBS score greater than or equal to 150. In addition, mortality occurred in 29.4% of cases with infection. Conclusion Severity and mortality factors in burns are mainly age, flame burns, extent, depth and infection. Our study confirms the importance of early and appropriate management in order to improve the vital and functional prognosis of burn patients.
