Health Conditions And Medical Practices In Ottoman Algeria: A Western Perspective

Abstract

Abstract: This article examines the health conditions in Ottoman Algeria and the therapeutic methods employed there, as recorded in Western writings, since these sources contain significant observations on the subject. Notable examples include the journey of English physician Shaw in the first half of the 18th century and the travels of French naturalists Peyssonnel and Desfontaines during the same century. The writings left by Pastor Poiret and French Consul Vallière at the end of this century are equally important, as are the observations of Italian captive Pananti and Trapani at the beginning of the 19th century, in addition to studies published in the African Journal by Barbrugger, Devoulx. These writings compiled a significant collection of information and historical observations about the study's subject, including discussions of diseases prevalent in the province and treatment methods. Based on their records, we provide a historical examination of the province's health situation and the widespread medical practices by presenting a general overview of health conditions and therapeutic approaches adopted by Algerians during that period. يهتم هذا المقال بالحديث عن الوضع الصحي بالجزائر العثمانية، وأساليب التداوي بها من خلال ما رصدته الكتابات الغربية، كون هذه الأخيرة حملت في طياتها ملاحظات هامة عن الموضوع، كرحلة الدكتور الإنجليزي شو في النصف الأول من القرن 18م، ورحلتي عالما الطبيعة الفرنسيان بايسونال، وديفنتان خلال القرن ذاته، كما لا تقل أهمية عن مؤلفاتهم الكتابات التي تركها القس بواري، والقنصل الفرنسي فاليار في أواخر هذا القرن، ولا حتى ملاحظات الأسير الإيطالي بنانتي، و تراباني في مطلع القرن 19م، إضافة إلى الدراسات المنشورة بالمجلة الأفريقية لكل من باربروجير ودوفو . جمعت هذه الكتابات رصيدا هاما من المعلومات، والملاحظات التاريخية المتعلقة بموضوع الدراسة، كحديثها عن الأمراض المنتشرة بالإيالة وأساليب العلاج، وبناء على ما ذكرته، سنلقي نظرة تاريخية على الوضع الصحي بالإيالة والممارسات الطبية المنتشرة بها من خلال تقديم لمحة عامة حول الوضع الصحي، وأساليب العلاج المعتمدة لدى الجزائريين آنذاك.
