Violent Crime And The Issue Of Carrying Bladed Weapons

Authors : Derdeche Ahmed .

Abstract

Like in many other modern societies, a noticeable increase in the rate of commission of violent crimes has been observed during the last few years in Algeria, posing therefore different challenges for public safety services in this country. Among the factors exacerbating this situation is the pervasive presence of bladed weapons during interpersonal disputes. These weapons not only escalate conflicts but often transform them to deadly confrontations, thereby intensifying public anxiety and fostering a pervasive sense of insecurity within the community. This research work aims to illuminate the complex issue of pre-carrying bladed weapons by offenders and its correlation with the prevalence of violent crime in Algeria. It scrutinizes the extent to which the pre-carrying of such weapons contributes to the perpetration of violent crimes. Furthermore, the research undertakes a comparative analysis of Algeria’s current legal mechanisms with those employed in other foreign jurisdictions to curb such kind of phenomenon. The study employs a dual-method approach, combining the statistical analysis of a real life data collected from the daily activities of the National Gendarmerie units, from one side, with a comprehensive survey by purposive sampling, from the other side. This methodological framework seeks to elucidate the circumstances under which the pre-carrying of bladed weapon serves as a catalyst to commit violent crimes. The objective is to propose a set of actions which, collectively can help to prevent the recurrence of similar violent acts under analogous circumstances in the future. Through its findings and recommendations, the study aspires to bolster efforts to combat this phenomenon by proposing a coherent, scientifically grounded approach based on the principle of "zero tolerance" toward the pre-carrying of bladed weapons. Additionally, it seeks to help competent authorities to develop effective policies in order to reduce the number of violent crimes trough combating the pre-carrying of such weapons. Moreover, the study emphasizes the critical importance of raising public awareness regarding the dangers of this issue, thereby mitigating its detrimental impact on societal security and stability.
