Forensic anthropology’s integration into Algeria’s judicial framework marks a revolutionary shift in medicolegal capabilities, with its formalization anchored to the establishment of the National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology (NICC) in 2008. This paper reviews the historical trajectory, operational standardization, and societal impact of forensic anthropology in Algeria, emphasizing the NICC’s pioneering role. Historically, pre-1867 archaeological work lacked osteological documentation; later efforts focused on racial typology until the 20th-century involvement of pathologists in identification. The NICC laboratory—staffed by multidisciplinary experts—revolutionized the field by implementing population-specific methods for biological profiling, trauma analysis, and post-mortem interval estimation tailored to Algerian populations, and ISO/IEC 17020:2012-compliant workflows. Knowledge dissemination via Algeria’s first university degree (Master) in Forensic Science and standardized field manuals has transformed stakeholder capabilities nationwide. Accreditation milestones and court certification of expert anthropologists (2021) position the NICC as a regional pioneer. Rigorous training, proficiency testing, and international partnerships (e.g., ICITAP) underpin quality management. A case study demonstrates the laboratory’s role in resolving a 5-year-old cold case involving a pregnant victim through skeletal analysis and DNA confirmation. Outreach initiatives have standardized field protocols across judicial, investigative, and archaeological sectors. Future priorities include method validation for diverse Algerian communities, adoption of ISO 21043-4:2025, archaeological collaboration for historical justice and academic expansion. The NICC laboratory serves as a model for institutionalizing forensic anthropology, enhancing justice delivery and seeking forensic sovereignty.
