الملخص

This article explores the nature of relations between Algiers and the Dano-Norwegian kingdom during the period 1727-1769, a stage characterized by the interplay between naval conflict and repeated attempts to establish peaceful and commercial ties. The study begins with an overview of Denmark’s situation in the early modern era, particularly its maritime and commercial policies, and highlights the extension of its naval activity into Southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin. This expansion brought Danish-Norwegian vessels into direct contact with the Algerian navy in both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, resulting in several confrontations that formed the backdrop for peace negotiations. Particular attention is given to the diplomatic initiatives that paved the way for the peace treaty of 1746. These include the role of the Slave Fund’s agent in Algiers, Christian Hennie (1736–1738), the attempt of the English merchant Alexander Ross, and finally the collective efforts led by Jean George Hansen and others, which culminated in the conclusion of the treaty. The article also discusses the establishment of a Dano-Norwegian consular presence in Algiers after 1746 as a key instrument for regulating political and commercial relations and ensuring safe navigation. By analyzing these dimensions, the study highlights the specificity of Algerian–Dano-Norwegian relations in the eighteenth century and shows how they evolved from naval confrontation to diplomatic settlement grounded in treaties and consular representation.
