This research proposes a compensation system designed to reduce reactive power and harmonic currents in a three-phase distribution network by integrating a photovoltaic (PV) system with a five-level inverter-based shunt active power filter (SAPF). The control strategy for the SAPF is based on the instantaneous power theory (p–q theory). The entire system, including the distribution network supplying a nonlinear load and the SAPF integrated with the solar system, is modeled and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink. The effectiveness of the proposed SAPF is evaluated using key performance metrics such as total harmonic distortion (THD) of the source current, power factor, and reactive power compensation. Extensive simulation results confirm the enhanced performance of the five-level inverter-based SAPF when combined with the PV system.
