Abstract

This study aims to shed light on the transition in Algeria’s energy mix is seeking to use renewable energy sources to enhance its energy security by diversifying its energy mix and reducing its dependence on fossil fuels to increase the percentage of renewable energy usage, supporting the significant shift towards sustainable development. Algeria’s potential for renewable energy is considerable, given its abundant natural resources. The Sahara Desert as one of the world’s highest solar potentials, while the coastal regions provide opportunities for wind energy development. Effectively harnessing these resources could lead to significant economic, social, and environmental benefits, including job creation, energy security, and reduced dependency on fossil fuels. Moreover, the global shift towards cleaner energy sources presents Algeria with a unique opportunity to position itself as a leader in renewable energy within the African continent and beyond. However, the transition to renewable energy to achieve sustainable development is not without challenges. It requires substantial investment in infrastructure, technology, and human capital, as well as the development of a robust policy framework to support and incentivize the growth of the renewable energy sector. Furthermore, the socio-economic impacts of such a transition must be carefully managed to ensure that the benefits are equitably distributed across different regions and populations within the country.
