This article aims to examine the concept of substance, as articulated in the various writings of Rene Descartes, treating it as a problematic notion which resists any definitive or final resolution, Descartes defines substance in way that applies exclusively to God, who alone exists independently. Neverthless, he admits the existence of created substances, namely the mind as a thinking substance, and the body as an extended one, this distinction has come to be known in the history of philosophy as Cartesian dualism, . In his analysis of the relationship between these two substance, Descartes simultaneously affirms their interaction and distinction; therby introducing an inherent tension between separation and unity. This tension constitutes what we refer to in this article as the problematic aspect of Descartes’conception of substance. The philosophical implication of this issue are significant, exerting a profound influence onsubsequent modern philosophers, particularly Spinoza and Leibniz..
