Pragmatics In Automated English-arabic Translation: A Fluency And Adequacy Analysis Of Google Translate’s Output

Abstract

• Abstract: In cross-linguistic meaning transfer, preserving pragmatic meaning remains a persistent challenge in machine translation (MT), particularly in culturally distinct language pairs like English and Arabic. To assess the extent to which it is maintained, this study evaluates the English-Arabic translation quality of Google Translate’s (GT) output, through a descriptive qualitative and quantitative analysis of its fluency and adequacy, in comparison with the original communication intent. Findings reveal that though GT generates relatively linguistically accurate translations, it often fails to adequately address pragmatic and culturally-bound aspects, essential for effective cross-cultural communication, such as speech acts, politeness, idioms, irony, and others. Hence, the renderings are deemed pragmatically erroneous as a result of the GT automatic defaulting to literalness. This highlights the need of pragmatics-based MT to preserve communicative intent in AI-driven translation systems. Keywords: Communication Intent, English-Arabic Translation Quality, Google Translate’s Output, Pragmatic Meaning الملخص في عملية نقل المعاني من لغة إلى أخرى، يضل الحفاظ على المعنى التداولي يشكل تحديا مستمرا في الترجمة الآلية، لاسيما فيما يخص اللغات المتمايزة لغويا وثقافيا مثل الانجليزية والعربية. من الانجليزية إلى العربية وذلك من خلال دراسة تحليلية وصفية نوعية وكمية Google Translate لتقييم مدى الحفاظ على هذا المعنى تقوم هذه الدراسة بتقييم جودة الترجمات الصادرة عن لطلاقة وملائمة اللغة المستهدفة بالمقارنة مع القصد الأصلي للتواصل. أظهرت النتائج أنه على الرغم من أن هذا النظام يقدم ترجمات دقيقة نسبيا لغويا، إلا أنه غالبا ما يفشل في الترجمة الصحيحة للمعاني التداولية المرتبطة بالثقافة والتي تعتبر ضرورية للتواصل الفعال بين الثقافات، مثل أفعال القول، التهذيب، الاصطلاحية، التهكم وغيرها. ومنه، تعتبر هذه الترجمات التداولية خاطئة وذلك لأنها تعتمد أليا على الترجمة الحرفية. هذا ما يسلط الضوء على ضرورة الترجمة الآلية القائمة على التداولية بهدف عدم الإخلال بالقصد التواصلي في أنظمة الترجمة المعتمدة على الذكاء الاصطناعي. المعنى التداولي ،Google Translate الكلمات المفتاحية: القصد التواصلي، جودة الترجمة من الانجليزية إلى العربية، ترجمات
