Abstract

In recent years, Direct Current Networks (DCNs) have attracted researchers and scientists in high-voltage transmission lines, Medium-Voltage Distribution Networks (MV-DN), and microgrids. This is due to the many benefits they offer compared to traditional Alternating Current Networks (ACNs). These advantages can only be seen under specific criteria and conditions concerning the energy source, the network, and the load. The studies on this topic came up with outstanding results regarding implementing DCN in different applications like photovoltaic generation and battery storage systems. This paper focuses on the integration of Photovoltaic Distributed Generation (PVDG) into MV-DN using the standard IEEE 33-bus ACN and DCN. To make a comparison of the outcomes, an objective function consists of minimizing the Active Power Losses (APLs) and improving the Voltage Profile (VP) using a metaheuristic algorithm called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). This algorithm properly allocates and sizes the PVDG unit into the Radial Distribution Network (RDN). The findings show a decrease in APLs and an improvement in the VP after the installation of the PVDG in both networks, with much better results for DCN compared with those of ACN.
