3-phases PM synchronous machines associated with PWM VSI drives are intensively used nowadays in various applications. To ensure the optimal operation of these machines, it is essential to apply a proper control algorithm on the drive, that aims to enhance the performance and maximize the efficiency. Over the years, various control techniques have been developed, from the simplest to the most sophisticated. Among them, Field oriented control has emerged as one of the most widely used methods, despite its dependence on machine parameters and rotor position. This experimental study investigates the influence of the non-null initial rotor position on the performance of a three-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine controlled via Field-Oriented Control and driven by a two-level, three-phase IGBT-based voltage source inverter. Results demonstrate that inaccuracies in the rotor's initial position, particularly errors exceeding 90°, can prevent proper machine operation. Such errors may lead to failure to start, reverse rotation without speed control, or excessive currents capable of damaging the motor windings. Additionally, a technique is proposed to ensure the rotor aligns with its true zero-degree position before starting
