Ceramic mosaics first adorned the earliest Islamic architecture in the Eastern Islamic world, with their earliest examples appearing in the Dome of the Sakhra Mosque and other Umayyad mosques and palaces. This decorative tradition later extended across the Islamic West (Maghreb) through its various historical phases, reaching its peak by the end of the Almohad dynasty and the beginning of the successor states. These later dynasties left behind numerous architectural landmarks, including those in the city of Tlemcen. Of particular note are the Marinid structures, built during the period of conflict between the Zayyanid and Marinid dynasties. These buildings featured rich artistic decoration, most notably ceramic mosaics, which covered large surfaces and formed magnificent artistic panels, especially within mosque architecture. A prime example is the Mosque of Sidi El-Haloui, located on the outskirts of Tlemcen, where ceramic mosaics adorn key architectural elements such as the commemorative entrance, the minaret's shaft, and its pavilion. The decorative repertoire includes a variety of geometric patterns-used predominantly-alongside botanical motifs and, to a lesser extent, calligraphic designs. The diversity of colors and scales seen in these mosaics reflects the ongoing development and continuity of ceramic mosaic production and ornamentation in the Maghreb.
