This study investigates the determinants of bank profitability in Algeria over the period 2016-2023, employing panel data techniques. Profitability, measured by return on assets (ROA), is found to be negatively and significantly affected by the cost of risk, while banking activity exerts a strong positive influence. Bank size has a marginal but statistically significant effect, acting mainly as a control factor rather than a core driver of performance. Based on these findings, the study highlights the importance of effective risk management and the expansion of banking activities as key levers for enhancing profitability in the Algerian banking sector.
