Abstract

The contemporary world exhibits growing interest in history, in general, and in historical events, in particular; a phenomenon that’s continuously reflected in the novelistic domain. The novel constitutes a fertile field where history and narration intertwine, giving rise to works categorized under the newly proposed term ‘historical imagination’. Ayman Al-Attoom's novel ‘The Road to Hell’ exemplifies this, shedding light on a tributary of Arab literature—prison literature—through narration blending reality, fiction, and storytelling. In this study, we engage with theoretical frameworks concerning narration, history, and memory, culminating in our proposal of the term ‘historical imagination’. The second section examines the novel's evocation of memory, its historical imagination, and its historical referents concerning depicted events. Furthermore, it analyzes these elements at the level of textual thresholds’ discourse particularly title, cover image and narrative structure
