The purpose of this paper is to emphasize that the policy of free trade in international commerce is not necessarily the most suitable approach for developing countries (PED) to ensure economic growth and development. It would be a mistake to assume that the benefits of opening up to international trade can automatically be obtained without challenges or conflicts. This article reviews recent and older literature to argue why and how international trade openness is not universally beneficial for all partners involved. Additionally, it aims to determine the economic policies required for successful engagement in international trade.
