Natural Gas: A Bridge Or A Destination For A Low Carbon Economy?

Authors : Rahmane Amal .

Abstract

Natural gas, a clean substitute to oil and coal, has emerged as an energy source leading to the shift towards a low-carbon economy. By employing the descriptive and analytical method, this paper assesses the potential of natural gas in becoming a long-term objective in a sustainable energy future or if it is solely a transitional energy source. Accordingly, the present paper inspects the circumstances wherein natural gas could support long-term carbon reduction objectives. Although natural gas has instant emissions advantages, concerns arise with regard to its ecological footprint and compatibility with deep decarbonization pathways. Finally, the paper concludes with an evaluation of economic factors and policy implications that will determine if natural gas can evolve beyond a transitional fuel and assumes a foundational role in a low-carbon economy.
