The issue of prisoners of war is one of the most important topics in international humanitarian law, as it is the law governing armed conflicts, a situation where a category of individuals fall under the status of prisoners of war. The Third Geneva Convention of 1949 and the First Additional Protocol of 1977, annexed to the four Geneva Conventions, addressed all matters related to prisoners of war, by defining the categories of people who qualify as prisoners of war and the conditions a combatant must meet to be granted prisoner-of-war status. The convention also outlines the rights and duties of prisoners, as well as the protections that states party to the convention are obligated to provide, from the moment a combatant falls into enemy hands until the end of captivity, in accordance with the provisions of the 1949 Third Convention regarding the termination of captivity. This convention establishes the obligation to treat prisoners humanely at all stages of captivity and affirms the detaining state's responsibility for any failure to protect prisoners
