The military institution is considered as one of the main pillars of the Egyptian state since its establishment during the reign of Muhammed Ali Pacha and its emergence as a pivotal political actor since the 1952 coup. Accordingly, the present study highlights an attempt to understand the nature of the relationship between the military institution and the political authority in Egypt, focusing on the nature and the effectiveness of its role in the political process in the aftermath of the January 25, 2011 Revolution as well as examining the key determinants behind the growth and the evolution of its political influence either controlling or shaping authority. That said, the study concludes that the military institution in Egypt, by virtue of its position within the structure of the authority since 1952 and its deeply influence across the state’s political, economic, administrative and security domain, alongside the central roles it has played to define the course of the political transition and the adopted strategies to safeguard its position in the absence of the consensus among the civil forces on the transitional course, towards a peaceful democratic transformation rendering it the dominant force in the political equation acting as a principal actor in the political struggle for power, which eventually resulted in the military elite’s hegemony over power and the re-establishment of the authoritarian military regime in Egypt.
