Abstract

The worldwide transition to blended learning during the COVID-19 pandemic brought about new difficulties for EFL students, affecting them differently depending on their personality characteristics, especially introversion and extroversion. This research seeks to examine the motivation and behaviors of these learner types at Algerian universities, drawing comparisons between them. Using a mixed methods research approach, the study gathered data through a questionnaire and the MBTI test. The sample comprised 53 second- and third-year EFL students from Guelma University in Algeria. The findings indicate that both introverted and extroverted EFL learners encountered numerous challenges with distance education, with many expressing a preference for in-person learning. Additionally, learners experienced anxiety, depression, and diminished motivation. Introverted students were more prone to anxiety, while extroverts were particularly affected by the lack of social interaction. Despite these difficulties, EFL learners, being introverts or extroverts, demonstrated significant improvement in their autonomous learning skills.
