The Algerian society has experienced various forms of women's political participation across different socio-historical stages, yet this participation has consistently remained weak compared to the demographic weight of Algerian women, especially in terms of their representation in parliament. To address this, the Algerian state adopted the women's quota system starting with the 2012 legislative elections. This paper aims to examine the impact of the different types of women's quotas on the number of female parliamentarians in Algeria, within the context of its interaction with the Algerian socio-political environment. The study concludes that despite the diversity of quota mechanisms and their challenge to both implicit and explicit values surrounding female representation, the traditional stereotypical perception of women’s political roles remains unchanged. The quotas increased the numerical presence of women but failed to bring about deep-rooted cultural transformation.
