Abstract: This study aims to assess the extent to which Netflix impacts the cinema box office. It examines the changing dynamics between streaming services, specifically Netflix, and traditional cinema attendance and revenues. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing research, empirical studies, and industry insights, this study presents a nuanced understanding of the relationship between Netflix and the cinema box office. The findings suggest that the availability of Netflix and other streaming platforms has led to a shift in viewer preferences and habits, resulting in a decline in cinema attendance. The convenience and affordability of streaming services have provided viewers with a viable alternative to traditional theater experiences, leading to increased competition for audiences' attention. Furthermore, the impact of Netflix on the cinema box office varies based on factors such as release strategies, film genres, and budget ranges. The exclusive release of films on Netflix's platform, bypassing the theatrical window, has been found to negatively affect box office revenues, particularly for films with a strong appeal to home viewers. However, simultaneous releases on both streaming platforms and cinemas have shown mixed results, with potential synergies and cross-promotional opportunities. Moreover, research suggests that the impact of Netflix on cinema box office revenues is more significant for films with shorter theatrical runs, lower star power, and limited marketing budgets. Art house films, independent movies, and documentaries, which often have limited theatrical releases, have found a wider audience through streaming platforms, positively impacting their box office performance. This paper is the first to assess the impact of Netflix on the demand for movie theater tickets and its purpose is to stimulate a discussion for further research. By analyzing the relationship between Netflix and movie theater ticket sales, this study aims to shed light on the changing preferences of consumers in the entertainment industry. The findings of this research can provide valuable insights for industry professionals and policymakers in adapting to the evolving landscape of movie consumption.
