Algerian society has recently witnessed profound socio-cultural changes that have impacted behaviors, values, and perceptions. One of the more concerning manifestations of these shifts is the growing phenomenon of food waste, particularly the disposal of surplus or leftover food. Often practiced as a display of generosity, wealth, or social prestige, this behavior has, in some cases, become normalized—even celebrated—despite its negative implications. This trend not only reflects a shift in mentalities but also raises pressing questions related to food security, especially in a global context marked by scarcity and inequality. The act of wasting food—while others struggle to meet basic nutritional needs—highlights a growing social insensitivity and detachment from collective ethical responsibility. From this perspective, food waste is not merely a personal choice but a broader societal issue that challenges notions of social responsibility. To better understand the motivations behind this practice and its social and environmental repercussions, we propose a field study in collaboration with researchers who have observed this phenomenon firsthand. This study aims to explore the underlying cultural, economic, and psychological factors contributing to food waste in Algerian society and how it intersects with the principles of sustainability and ethical consumption.
