Abstract

In the context of nuclear research reactors, which are dedicated to the implementation of nuclear applications, the operation of nuclear power reactors (PWRs) in base load or load following mode is exclusively concerned with the continuous production of electricity. Indeed, PWRs are only shut down for refuelling or periodic maintenance. However, due to this economic reason, which prevents direct experimentation, modelling and simulation become imperative for the study and analysis of nuclear power plant performance. In this study, a PWR reactor core was modelled using the point-kinetic approach with MATLAB programming environment. To obtain a realistic representation of the reactor core behaviour, the developed mathematical model integrates neutronic and thermohydraulic sub-models, as well as negative feedback effects of temperature and xenon dynamics. The model was validated by open-loop simulation experiments, yielding results that are consistent with those reported in the extant literature. The model was then employed to assess the performance of the reactor in load following mode, using both PID and fuzzy logic controllers. The efficacy of these control strategies was substantiated through closed-loop simulations, with the fuzzy logic controller exhibiting superior performance.
