Abstract

Cirrhosis is a severe and progressive disease that constitutes a major public health concern in our country due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. This study aimed to analyze and update the epidemiological, clinical, and semi-evolutionary aspects of cirrhosis based on available data. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted in the Hepato-Gastroenterology Department of the national hospital centre of Constantine over one year, from 20 to 202. A total of 44 patients diagnosed with cirrhosis were included. The average age was 40 years (range: 20–60 years), with a female predominance (sex ratio F/M = 1.93). Among them, 70% were over the age of 40. Viral hepatitis was reported in 24 patients (54.5%), while alcohol consumption accounted for 18% of cases. The main causes of hospitalization were significant weight loss (60.4%), abdominal pain (46.5%), digestive hemorrhage (11.6%), portal hypertension (39.5%), and jaundice (18.6%). The mortality rate was 15.9%, primarily due to severe digestive hemorrhage (57.1% of deaths) and complications related to ascites and hepatic encephalopathy. These results underline the persistent burden of viral and alcoholic cirrhosis in our region, with late diagnosis and limited access to care being major contributing factors
