Authors : Alradimi Muna . Mellor Noha .

Abstract

This study explores the film value chain of the Arabian film sector, focusing on the UAE's films. Employing a value chain framework, it examines the UAE's film industry's unique challenges within its value chain in terms of production, distribution, and consumption. Empirically, the study is based on the views of nine local filmmakers through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The findings shed light on the unique case of the UAE, a wealthy small nation that shifted from providing direct subsidies to its local film industry to investing in “film tourism,” such as providing logistical support to Hollywood and Bollywood productions filmed in the UAE. This shift is a significant change in the industry's approach and is a key focus of the article, which seeks to explore the underlying issues hindering the growth and development of the UAE's film industry. The article offers insights into regional film dynamics, especially in small nations like the UAE.
