The Unbalanced Growth Strategy In Algeria: Justifications And Factors Of Success

Authors : Benameur Nabil .

Abstract

The Algerian economy has shown resilience and recovery post-COVID-19, with GDP growth rates of 3.8%, 3.6%, and 4.1% in 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively. Key sectors like agriculture, construction, services, and extractive industries contributed variably to this growth, with hydrocarbons remaining a dominant driver despite declining global prices. The manufacturing sector, however, experienced a significant slowdown. The analysis highlights the importance of intersectoral linkages and advocates for an unbalanced growth strategy, prioritizing industrialization to foster economic diversification, reduce import dependency, and enhance export competitiveness. Agricultural development and strategic industrial policies are crucial for sustainable growth and food security.
