The North African states of the fifteenth century had extensive foreign relations with many contemporary countries. These relations ranged from political to economic, although this study focuses exclusively on the economic dimension. The economic dimension encompassed the agricultural, industrial and commercial sectors, all of which were the fundamental pillars of the North African economy. In particular, the agricultural sector was closely linked to the military, as the rulers of the North African emirates implemented a feudal system designed to accommodate the prevailing military rule. Meanwhile, the artisanal sector was influenced by the internal political situation of these emirates. The commercial sector, considered one of the most important, was intertwined with both foreign and domestic politics. Because of North Africa's strategic location at the heart of the Mediterranean world, its rulers established extensive trade relations with neighbouring countries and, for a time, controlled world trade in the western Mediterranean. This dominance was achieved through a foreign policy based on monopolies and tariffs, facilitated by a series of trade agreements and treaties with the Sudanese region on the one hand and western southern Europe on the other.
