Morisco Lifes By Themselves

Authors : Bernabé Pons Luis .

Abstract

It is often stated that the texts transmitted or created by Mudejars and Moriscos, predominantly of a religious nature, are essentially the product of translations and copies of earlier works. To the obvious consequences of this fact (anonymity, a certain impersonality in the copies, etc.), we must add the collective nature of a literature made by believers for believers. In this sense, it is difficult for the personal voice of the author to emerge in these texts, drowned on one side by the normativity of the religious texts that must circulate, and on the other, by the urgencies under which the life of the community unfolds. On rare occasions, even in these texts, fleeting testimonies of individual contemporaneity appear, lamenting the plight of the Moriscos or affirming their will to remain faithful to the proscribed Islamic faith. However, the norm is for only the inherited cultural and religious message from ancestors to shine through.
