الكلمات المفتاحية: وان قولى، قاموس، الجوهري، الصحاح، الطباعة العثمانية. summary " Wanqulu's dictionary" The first Islamic book in Arabic script to be printed in Istanbul In the year 1141 AH / 1728-1729 AD summary As is clear from the title of the article, its topic relates to the first Islamic book written in the Arabic script that was printed in the Ottoman capital, Istanbul in particular, and in the Ottoman Empire and Islamic countries in general. This was in the year 1141 AH / 1728-1929 AD, and in the first Islamic Ottoman printing press was established in the Ottoman countries, on the initiative of one of the European converts, Ibrahim Mutafarrika (d. 1160 AH / 1747 AD), and with the support of Sultan Ahmed III (1115 - 1143 AH / 1703 - 1730 AD), and with him his Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha (d. 1155 AH / 1743 AD). With the recommendation of Sheikh al-Islam Abdullah Effendi (d. 1156 AH / 1743 AD). That book is the dictionary attributed to “Muhammad Wan Qulu,” and it is known in the Ottoman Turkish language as: “Lughatti Wan Quli.” The article was divided into two basic elements: the first was devoted to the author of the dictionary, Muhammad Wan Qulu, who was one of the great scholars of the Ottoman Empire in the 11th century AH/17AD. He was a jurist in addition to being a linguist and a writer, and he knew the three Islamic languages common in the Ottoman Empire at that time, which were Turkish, Arabic And Persian. Although Wan Qulu worked in the judiciary, he was also interested in writing, and after his death he left us a number of books, and his aforementioned dictionary was one of them. The second element of the article was devoted to introducing the dictionary under study, which is a translation from Arabic into Ottoman Turkish of the dictionary written by the Muslim linguist of Turkish origin Ismail al-Jawhari (393 AH / 1003 AD), called “Taju’llugha we sihahu’l Arabiya.” Through this translation, “Wan Qulu” transformed the aforementioned dictionary from a monolingual dictionary directed at searching the meanings of Arabic words in the Arabic language, to a bilingual dictionary directed at searching the Arabic words in the Turkish language. In other words, he transformed it from an Arabic dictionary only, into an Arabic-Turkish dictionary. In this way, “Wan Qulu” provided an important educational and research tool for those involved in teaching and researching Arabic-Islamic literature in Ottoman schools. The book was introduced from five aspects: authorship, title, printing, content, and objectives. Keywords: Wan Qulu, dictionary, Al-Jawhari, Al-Sihah, Ottoman printing.
