General Marie Mong's Campaigns Against The Oulad Nail Lands 1844-1848

Authors : Helis Abdelkader .

Abstract

The tribes of Oulad Nail have recorded a historical jihadist journey and immortal stances in the pages of national history. This journey began with their allegiance to Prince Abdelkader and their provision of support in terms of men and supplies, ensuring the continuity of national resistance under his leadership in the central plains and at the edge of the desert. All of this prompted the colonial authorities to pursue Prince Abdelkader's path and punish the tribes that pledged allegiance and support to him, including the Oulad Nail. Consequently, they decided to launch military campaigns against the regions inhabited by the Oulad Nail tribes during the period from 1844 to 1852. This was a critical phase in the expansion of French colonialism into the vast south, allowing the colonial authorities to establish their military bases and administrations to continue the occupation. In their efforts to ensure France's security within those areas and to seek control over desert trade caravans, various factors contributed to the colonial forces' push for expansion through military campaigns. Among the fiercest of these were the campaigns directed towards the Oulad Nail regions, led by General Marie Mong, which will be examined in this research paper
