My observation, over the years, as a teacher of English as a foreign language, of the teaching of American civilisation as part of the English degree curriculum at the Section of English, Faculty of Letters, Languages and Arts, University of Oran, brought me to note a systematic lack of a sound and clear syllabus design policy that would provide teachers with guidelines towards the elaboration of a pertinent and relevant programme in American civilisation, a module introduced in order to equip the student with the cultural background that underlies a foreign language learning. To remedy this, this paper caIls for an urgent didactic transposition whicb is supposed to accompany the integration of any discipline within a university syllabus. It also examines the various facets of this didactic vacuum as weil as the possible means to curb it.
Civilisation américaine, transposition didactique, savoir savant, savoir à enseigner, savoir enseigné, noosphère. désyncrétisation du savoir, programmabilité de l'acquisition, obsolescence didactique.
