The Rebellion Of The Tuareg In Mali: A Quest For A State Or An Identity Oxymoron?

Authors : Iratni Belkacem .

Abstract

This study deals with a “hot” subject related to the rebellion of the Tuareg in North Mali. This rebellion has worsened with the proclamation of an independent State in these parts of this country by the National Movement of the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) since late 2011. It was also exacerbated by the emergence of terrorist groups which fight for a theocratic State and for the implementation of the Sharia (Islamic law) over the whole country. The contention consists of explaining that this self-proclaimed independence of the Tuareg is a kind of oxymoron in the sense that neither their identity fabric nor their way of life and their dispersion over five countries do militate for the setting up of an autonomous political entity. Political instability coupled with the control of North Mali by Islamist terrorist groups and their affiliated networks engaged in drug smuggling and illicit arms trade may set the whole Sahel-Sahara region in turmoil and in a spiral of violence. The preparation of a United Nations-backed military intervention in Mali raises also a set of uncertainties with regard not only to the future of this country but also the Tuareg plea for an illusory autonomous State.
