This contribution tries to highlight the situation of the fertility of Algerian women from independence to the present day. Analysis of birth rates and age-specific fertility rates since 1970 shows a change in the timing of fertility (age-specific fertility) since 1986, when fertility declines began according to the Algerian national survey on fertility (ENAF 1986). This change consists in a postponement of births over the aged ages, whereas during the period from 1966 to 1986 these are mostly at young ages. The fertility of Algerian women is characterized by two models: that of a natural fertility with 7 to 8 children per woman and which prevailed until 1986/1987 and that of a planned fertility with a number of 2 to 4 of fertility, Children per woman. Births in this latter model occur at relatively high ages, specifically from the age of 35 years. These two models are highlighted by examining the age-specific fertility rates recorded by the various censuses and the various demographic surveys.
