Coordination:
Dr. Tayeb ADDOUN[1]*, Dr. Ahmed Mokhtar LENSARI[2]*

"Arid, Semi-Arid Regions and Development Challenges"
: Coordination
Dr. Tayeb ADDOUN [1]*, Dr. Ahmed Mokhtar LENSARI[2]*
The editorial of the review "Geography Journal of the West" is pleased to invite researchers to submit their scientific articles on the theme “Arid, Semi-Arid Regions and Development Challenges", as part of the first issue of the fourteenth volume, scheduled for publication in October 2026. This issue is coordinated by Dr. Tayeb ADDOUN, Dr. Ahmed Mokhtar LENSAR,.
Rationale
Arid and semi-arid regions around the world are increasingly affected by environmental and economic pressures, particularly in the context of natural resource degradation and climate change. These areas, which represent a significant portion of the Earth's surface, are undergoing rapid transformations and facing growing challenges—ranging from changes in land use and settlement patterns to water scarcity, natural disasters, and biodiversity loss.
These persistent pressures have serious consequences for ecosystems and the stability of local communities, exacerbating the vulnerability of both the environment and human livelihoods (UNEP, 2025). For example, parts of North Africa are currently experiencing worsening environmental conditions, with accelerating desertification leading to land degradation, the loss of pasturelands, and the disruption of traditional agricultural practices (WFP, 2025).
These transformations, which often result in severe social and economic impacts, call for urgent action at local, regional, and international levels. Such interventions must aim to reinforce the resilience of these territories through both the development of new tools and the reinforcement of existing systems (Laurent, 2020).
Since the 1970s, numerous studies have addressed the specificities of arid and semi-arid regions from diverse perspectives—biological, agricultural, social, and environmental. The coexistence of multiple knowledge systems and management approaches highlights the complex and dynamic nature of these territories (Hadeid et al., 2022). Moreover, the rapid pace of change in these regions demands an equally dynamic production of knowledge to guide sustainable responses.
Developing arid and semi-arid regions requires integrated strategies aimed at ensuring the sustainable renewal of natural resources. These include the adoption of efficient irrigation techniques, the use of sustainable agricultural practices that protect soil quality, and the implementation of environmental management programs to combat desertification and mitigate the advance of sand dunes. Measures to prevent wildfires, locust infestations, and the degradation of fragile lands are also critical to protecting both agricultural and urban areas, as well as the livelihoods of local populations.
Ultimately, regional and international cooperation is essential to designing and implementing long-term strategies that respond to these growing challenges and promote the resilience and sustainability of arid and semi-arid regions.
