Résumé
Abstract : It has long been established that good translations should be faithful. However, faithfulness is perceived in different ways based on theorists’ and practitioners’ views, beliefs and preferences. Indeed, decision-making in translation depends on various factors other than mere linguistic ones. Accordingly, one source text could have multiple versions in some target language. Thus, neutrality gets lost in translation. This paper tries to investigate what forces govern the act of translating, and answer questions such as : what makes a translator choose one strategy over another ? Does their choice imply that some position is being taken ? To what extent do such decisions remain in the realm of translation ethics ? Are biased translations to be trusted ?
