This study examines the dynamics of spatial transformation in the city of Nouakchott, tracing its historical emergence as a strategic political project that accompanied the independence of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and its subsequent evolution into a metropolitan area whose population has increased nearly 250-fold over the past six decades. Particular attention is given to the severe droughts of the 1970s and 1980s, which acted as a major catalyst for large-scale rural–urban migration. This demographic influx generated unprecedented urban growth that far exceeded the capacity of existing planning frameworks, transforming the capital into a compelling case for examining uncontrolled urbanization and the transition from nomadic lifestyles to spontaneous settlement within a fragile desert environment. The study further explores the city's urban morphology, characterized by extensive horizontal expansion along four principal transportation corridors. This pattern has produced a fragmented urban fabric marked by low residential density and the predominance of unplanned settlements. In addition, the study analyzes the principal natural and anthropogenic constraints that continue to impede the city's sustainable development, including the environmental challenges associated with its location amid sebkhas (salt flats) and advancing sand encroachment, as well as persistent structural deficiencies in sanitation infrastructure and municipal solid waste management. The study concludes by emphasizing the urgent need to reconfigure Nouakchott's urban space through an integrated strategic planning framework capable of reconciling rapid demographic growth with the environmental, infrastructural, and technical requirements of a sustainable modern city.
