Résumé

The effect of temperature on the rheological behavior of xanthan gum (XG) solutions must be considered during drilling operations, particularly at temperatures exceeding 50 °C. Therefore, this study focuses on the impact of temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 80 °C on the rheological properties of a 0.5 % XG solution. The results demonstrate that the XG solution exhibits remarkable thermal stability by maintaining a viscoplastic behavior across a temperature range of 20 °C to 50 °C, with a yield stress exceeding 2 Pa. However, temperatures above 50 °C strongly influenced its rheological behavior: the yield stress sharply decreased from 4.70 Pa at 20 °C to 0.77 Pa at 65 °C, and to 0.33 Pa at 80 °C. The apparent viscosity is not affected at low temperatures (< 50 °C). In contrast, it decreases significantly above 50 °C, particularly at low shear rates up to 40 s⁻¹. These results highlight the importance of strictly controlling temperature when formulating XG-based industrial fluids, particularly for applications requiring particle suspension above 55 °C.
