This study examines the dismantling of superstitious consciousness in theatrical discourse through Abu al-Eid Doudou’s play Al-Bashir. The dramatic text reveals the role of popular beliefs and superstitions in shaping individual and collective consciousness in Algerian society during the colonial period. In this context, the study investigates the ways in which the playwright employs dramatic structure, dialogue, comedy, and dramatic irony to expose the limitations of superstitious thinking and to critique its effects on the interpretation of reality. It also focuses on the character of “Al-Bashir,” who uses the claim of being possessed by jinn as a means of exposing prevailing patterns of thought and confronting the authority of charlatanism embodied by “Sidi al-Talib.” At the same time, the play foregrounds a discourse that advocates awareness, critical thinking, and adherence to identity, language, and freedom. This research paper aims to identify the mechanisms through which superstitious consciousness is deconstructed within theatrical discourse, and to demonstrate how such discourse contributes to questioning deeply rooted beliefs, criticizing popular cultural realities, and reconstructing sound consciousness on logical and rational foundations.
