Abstract The novel of the *Nahda* (Arab Renaissance) emerged against the backdrop of a crisis regarding the absence of social and historical consciousness; yet, it also took shape within the milieu of a transforming bourgeois elite that began to review and critique the past, question the present, and aspire toward a future built upon new foundations, a distinct vision, and a different mode of thought. Women played a prominent role in this foundational process through new novels that sought to disrupt the status quo and refute dominant traditional ideas. From among these voices and texts, we have selected two novels: *Husan al-Awaqib* (The Happy Outcome) by Zaynab Fawwaz and *Qalb al-Rajul* (A Man’s Heart) by Labiba Hashim. To what extent can these two texts be considered foundational building blocks of the Arabic novel? What are their aesthetic characteristics, and what are their intellectual and *Nahda*-era themes?
