Phonetic terminology occupies a prominent position in the Arabic linguistic heritage, as it developed in close connection with the emergence and evolution of Arabic phonetic studies, contributing to the establishment of a precise conceptual framework for describing and explaining phonetic phenomena. Among the most significant of these phenomena is phonetic assimilation, which attracted the attention of early Arab linguists and was later revisited in Orientalist scholarship through new conceptual and terminological frameworks. Against this background, the present study investigates the relationship between the Arabic foundations of this phenomenon and its subsequent reformulation in Orientalist thought by examining the convergences and divergences between Ibn Jinnī’s conception and the treatment proposed by the German orientalist Carl Brockelmann. It also seeks to determine the extent to which Orientalist scholarship contributed to the development of phonetic terminology. To achieve this objective, the study adopts a descriptive, analytical, and comparative approach based on the examination of the relevant discussions in Al-Khaṣāʾiṣ by Ibn Jinnī and Semitic Linguistics (Fiqh al-Lughāt al-Sāmiyyah) by Carl Brockelmann. It comparatively analyzes the concepts, classifications, and governing principles of phonetic assimilation in both the Arabic linguistic tradition and Orientalist scholarship. The findings demonstrate that the theoretical foundations of phonetic assimilation had already been firmly established in the Arabic linguistic heritage long before their reformulation in Orientalist studies. Brockelmann's contribution lay not in introducing the phenomenon itself but rather in reorganizing it within a more systematic terminological framework and classifying its different types according to a comparative linguistic perspective.
