Résumé

This study investigates the impact of linguistic immersion on the development of lexical and syntactic competence among preschool children enrolled in preparatory classes in Algerian kindergartens, taking the province of Mascara as a case study. It adopts an analytical psycholinguistic approach that integrates both quantitative and qualitative methods within the framework of a field-based case study, with the aim of examining the dynamics of language acquisition in its natural educational setting. The study also addresses linguistic issues specific to the Algerian context, particularly diglossia and the multiplicity of language input sources, and explores their implications for the development of children's linguistic competence during the preschool stage. The findings reveal noticeable variation in children's linguistic development according to the communicative environment in which they are immersed. Lexical development is found to be more advanced in relation to concrete objects and perceptual representations, whereas syntactic performance remains comparatively weaker, particularly in the use of cohesive devices and the production of complex sentence structures. The data further indicate that both the quality of linguistic immersion and the nature of children's surrounding linguistic input—whether within the family environment or through digital media—play a significant role in shaping language development during early childhood.
