Résumé

Abstract : This study examines the speech delivered by U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy on July 2, 1957, concerning the Algerian question, through a comparative analysis of the coverage provided by The New York Times and Le Monde. It aims to explore the nature of the journalistic treatment of the speech and to identify the similarities and differences between the American and French approaches in reporting and interpreting this event, which constituted one of the most significant international milestones in the history of the Algerian Revolution. The study employs the historical and comparative methods, complemented by content analysis, through an examination of newspaper articles and reports published in the aftermath of the speech and the political and media reactions it generated. The findings reveal that Kennedy’s speech represented an important turning point in the American debate over the Algerian issue, as it called for a reassessment of U.S. policy toward France and emphasized the necessity of recognizing the Algerian people's right to self-determination. The study also demonstrates that the U.S. administration maintained its official position of neutrality and non-intervention, while French diplomacy regarded the speech as an intrusion into a matter falling within France’s sovereign domain. Furthermore, the comparative analysis highlights a clear divergence in the editorial orientations of the two newspapers. The New York Times adopted a cautious approach, focusing primarily on the diplomatic implications of Kennedy’s initiative, whereas Le Monde devoted greater attention to French opposition to the speech and to defending the legitimacy of France’s presence in Algeria. The study concludes that the press did not merely report events but also played an active role in shaping political debates surrounding the Algerian question in both the United States and France, reflecting broader disagreements over the future of colonialism and national liberation movements during the Cold War era.
