Résumé

This article aims to trace the formative trajectory of myth criticism, an approach that has sought to read literary texts by uncovering their deep symbolic and mythological systems, based on the psychological, anthropological, and philosophical foundations that contributed to its establishment within Western culture. The study highlights the close relationship between literature and myth, considering myth as a form of collective human consciousness that has remained present in poetic language and artistic imagery throughout the ages. Furthermore, the study presents the contributions of several thinkers and critics in building the theoretical frameworks of myth criticism, while examining how these critical ideas transitioned into modern Arab criticism through the acculturation between Arab and Western cultures. In this article, we focus on the development of myth criticism in Arab culture, particularly through efforts that attempted to reread pre-Islamic poetry in light of ancient symbols and myths. It highlights the role of Ibrahim Abdel Rahman as a primary founder, credited with transitioning this trend from a stage of theoretical influence to one of methodological establishment. We also demonstrate that pre-Islamic poetic imagery is not understood merely as an aesthetic construct, but as a carrier of the traces of ancient religious beliefs and symbols. Consequently, our research concludes that myth criticism has contributed to broadening the horizons of reading the Arab literary heritage and uncovering its civilizational and human dimensions, despite the issues it raises regarding interpretation and the limits of linking poetry to myth.
